JOHN FRANCO, MD
Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon
Fellowship-Trained in Sports Medicine
Dr. John Franco is a sports medicine physician at New Mexico Orthopaedics. His focus is on knees, shoulders, repair of articular cartilage injuries, and minimally invasive surgery methods. He believes that orthopedics has offered him the perfect opportunity to combine his background in mechanical engineering and kinesiology with his desire to interact with and help others daily.
Dr. Franco enjoys helping patients accept and understand their injuries and working with them through the recovery process. He utilizes non-operative approaches to recovery whenever possible to meet patient goals in a timely manner.
When surgery is appropriate, Dr. Franco will use the most advanced, minimally invasive, or arthroscopic techniques to correct ailments and return the patient to an active lifestyle as quickly as possible with minimal discomfort.
Dr. Franco has developed a particular interest in adolescent injury prevention and joint cartilage repair and regeneration. He has contributed to the publication of several articles and research studies, and he continues to be very involved with the Santa Monica ACL Injury Prevention Project. Being involved in sports medicine as a team physician has been of significant value to Dr. Franco.
He has previous experience as a team physician at the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Pepperdine University, with the New Mexico United professional soccer team and U.S. soccer teams through regional coverage of men’s and women’s national soccer teams events. He continues to work with the Albuquerque Isotopes AAA professional baseball team and is also proud to provide medical coverage for local high school sports teams.
Dr. Franco enjoys golf, tennis, running, hiking, and skiing away from the office. Unquestionably, the most important part of his life is time spent enjoying the company of his two sons and his amazingly supportive wife.
